MIchigan Lighthouse - SkyWatch Friday

Michigan is surrounded on three sides by 4 of the 5 great lakes. We have 3,288 miles of shoreline. We have a lot of freighter traffic on our great lakes as long as the water isn't frozen. Because we are so far north we also have some terrific storms on the open waters which results in danger to the freighters. The lighthouses along our coastlines are becons of light and hope during the storms. This is just one of Michigan's 116 lighthouses which is located on the western coast of the lower pennisula. Have a great weekend.

P.S. For those of you who think this is a minature - enlarge the picture and check out the people on the left side of the photo to compare the size. Thanks for all your comments.

  1. What a great looking lighthouse, Gwendolyn! A terrific shot. My daughter and son-in-law live in Michigan and I've visited them several times I loved going to the Upper Peninsula and seeing Lake Superior! Could almost hear the song, The Edmund Fitzgerald and could imagine a storm there.

    Have a great weekend!

  8. Nice shot, a totally red lighthouse is definitely a first for me. Is it still used as a lighthouse? Traditionally they were white or red and white striped to be more readily visible to shipping.

  9. What a wonderful red lighthouse, and a fine photo! Thank you for sharing and for giving us some facts about your part of the world. As a retired librarian, I love any chance to learn more about our world from people who live in other places.

  15. What an interesting lighthouse! It has challenged my definitions by being all red - they are "supposed" to be white! I thought it was a house, till I read the post! I think it is a perfect shape for a house!!

  17. Lighthouses are one of my favorite objects to photograph. I don't believe I've ever seen a red lighthouse; great shot!

I would love to tour the Great Lakes one day; go on the Great Lakes Circle Tour ... just one of my dreams that I hope comes true!

  18. What an interesting lighthouse - red and square. I've never thought about how Michigan is bounded by four of the Great Lakes before. In fact, you got me thinking and I realized that Ontario has shoreline on four of the Great Lakes too. Very cool post!
