Corn Shock - My World

This is a field of corn that has been "shocked." The corn stalks are ripened in the field, and then the farmer comes around with a large knife and cuts the stalks and bundles them together. Later when the grain has matured and dried, the stalks are moved up to the barn and the corn ears are removed to be fed to the livestock. The remaining stalk is used for bedding or fed to the cattle for fiber. This field is an amish field. You can see by the size of the field that this would require a great amount of group effort to complete the harvest.

This caught my eye, because someone left a pink piece of paper in the mesh of the right chair before it snowed. I am quickly running out of good words for this weather. Enjoy your weekend....at least the sun is shining.

Feed to Food - SkyWatch Friday

Have you ever wondered how your food gets to your table? Somewhere out there a farmer works 7 days a week, through all kinds of weather so that you can have food on your table. Last weekend it was bitter cold. This farmer was getting feed out of the silo to give to the animals. This silo stands alone, the barn that was attached is now gone. I am grateful to these hard working folks.

The Community Store - MyWorld

This little community store was built some time in the early 1930's by Henry Ford. At that time it was part of Mr. Ford's school system. It was a place where the kids could learn the skills to manage a retail business: keep inventory, meet customers , handle the money, etc. They sold school books and other school supplies in addition to other necessary items. This little store still serves the surrounding community

Today it is a family run business located at the intersection of two country roads. If you run out of milk or bread or just want a newspaper, this is a convenient place to stop. The product line has changed over the years to keep up with their customers. Today you can rent a movie. They even have food for your cat.

Whenever we are travelling, we like to stop at these community stores. They are a wonderful source of local information - where to eat and what to see.

Climbing the stairs to the next level can often be slippery. Always look upward and keep focused on the goal. Once you reach the top - look around - it will be worth it.

Waitin' For Spring - MyWorld

One of my favorite summer hangout places is the Dairy Barn - a really hot place to get the best ice cream around. They'll make what ever you want - in a zillion amazing combination of flavors. Sadly they close for the winter. Here we see the picnic tables struggling to survive in the cold weather. I imagine they also will be glad to see the summer return.
