Family Fun

This family of flamingos were walking along the side of a very busy highway. Never-the-less, they were enjoying themselves. The hot humid weather seems to be to their liking.

Painted Lady! - MyWorld

This young lady caught my eye at the street fair in Brooklyn. Face painting seems to be very popular with the younger set. I liked her blue face, blue outfit and blue cotton candy.

My desktop computer is broken, so I edited this on my laptop, which apparently has a much brighter screen - thus the dark pictures recently. Her eyes are also blue, but they don't show up very well.

Now That's A Car!

Remember when these cars were on the road? They sure don't make 'em like that anymore!

Summer Postcard - SkyWatch Friday

I just couldn't resist. In the small rural village of Macon, there is a house with a trellis and a white picket fence. The lady spends a lot of time fussing with her flowers. She obviously has a green thumb! She always has her flag on the porch. I really liked the way this came together.

Down Memory Lane

In 1957 while on a family vacation in the Shenandoah Valley in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, dad took this photo of us kids. This picture was in his wallet when he passed away this spring. Apparently he carried it with him for all those years. Thanks to my sister, who discovered this picture and took the time to share the story.
Of course it showed it's age - I had to do some repairs - fix the crease, reconstruct a border and remove some scratches to get to what you see here.

Black Beauty - Well Almost

I love the sleek low elegant lines of these old cars. The yellow wheels are a nice contrast. I must admit, they were BEFORE my time. Just wanted to make that point very clear!

Tiger ON Your Tank - MyWorld

I don't know why antique car exhibitors put teddy's on display under the hood. I thought this one was cute.

Lighthouse

The Sturgeon Point Lighthouse was established in 1870 and is still active, but may shortly be decommissioned. The conical brick tower stands 68 feet tall, and visitors are able to climb it.
Here is a list of all the Michigan Lighthouses.

Oldies but Goodies!

We went to a car show this past weekend. Greg took this picture. What make, model and year do you think this belonged to?

Recycled Stone - MyWorld

We discovered this stone house on our recent trip. In Michigan, there are a lot of rocks in the ground. In order to farm the field, the farmer has to remove the rocks. Because of the freeze and thaw cycles in Michigan (which forces the rocks to the surface), the rocks have to be removed EVERY spring prior to working the fields. They are often piled up in fence rows, in ditches (to prevent erosion) or used for building. This is a genuine stone house, built many years ago. The ultimate in recycling!!! The interesting things about this farm was that they also had a couple of out-buildings and other structures built in the same style. It was a very well maintained farmstead - which showed the pride of it's current occupants.

Spring Planting

Preparing the field for planting has been difficult this year in southeastern Michigan. Too much rain! I caught this picture early Sunday morning on the way to church. I had to turn around and take a photo. The farmer was working this hill in hope that he could get some seed in the ground before it rained again. Only a few days are left in the planting season.

East Tawas Lighthouse - SkyWatch Friday

Tawas Point Lighthouse (in Michigan on Lake Huron) was established in 1876, and is still active today. We climbed to the top of the lighthouse and the view is awesome.

Proud to be an American

A tornado went through our area early this past Sunday morning. Fortunately no body lost their life, but many lost their homes, buildings, cars, trees and other property. We personally didn't have an damage. The community of Dundee was hit pretty hard. While driving through town we noticed that someone took the time to uncover this damaged flag and place it on top of the pile of rubble before moving on to help someone else. It was remarkable how quickly so many people came from near and far to help their neighbors. There were electric company trucks from all over the region helping to restore the power.

This flag was a reminder to me that no matter what happens, we live in a great country and whenever there is a crisis, as a nation we are willing to step forward and help our neighbors.

Rocky Road - MyWorld

Most of the beaches we encountered on our trip around Lake Huron were a wonderful sand. Great for walking along the shore. This strip of rocks caught my eye because they appear to lead you to the light house. I'll include some pictures of the lighthouses later.

The Perfect Ending - SkyWatch Friday

We extended the holiday weekend in order to get away and explore farther from home. We caught this sunset on the last night. What a great way to end a holiday get away. The sky was overcast all day which lead to beautiful clouds at sunset.
