Down on the Farm

It's in the details.  Notice the horse shoe hanging on the fence......

Fat Cat

Every year this farmer creates a animal farm character out of large round bales of straw to draw attention to his roadside produce stand.  This is the year of the cat.  To get the size in perspective - the round bales making up its body and head are about 600 pounds and about 5 feet in diameter.  Notice the bell on its collar to warn off unsuspecting rodents - or a neighborhood dog.

Down on the Farm

Fall has arrived.  The corn harvest has begun.  This is an unusual sight.  This combine was probably first used in the 1960s. A two row corn picker - spits out whole ears of corn. As opposed to the modern computer driven machines that pick 12 rows at a time and spits out kernals of corn (cob removed).   Be sure to thank a farmer for putting food on your table.  Long hours, hard work - even when they know the crop will be small this year - due to the lack of rain in our area.

Lazy Days of Summer

What a wonderful way to spend a hot summer day.  With fall just around the corner, you just gotta take advantage.

Doing It Right

One of my pet peeves is to go to a fair and watching the parents doing all the work preparing the animals for the show ring for their kids. Obviously this young lady has wise parents.   Here she is doing the finishing touches on her calf all by herself.  It's a great learning opportunity - a training ground for the future real world.

Three Young Ladies Taking A Break

After a long day of preparation and getting ready for their big day in the show ring these ladies are ready for a break.  All is well.

Big Boys Take A Break

These big guys weigh close to half a ton each.  Can you imagine 6 of them hitched together to pull a wagon or plow a field?

Need For Speed

I can smell the sweat, feel the hoofbeats, and hear the crowd encouraging their favorite.  A new blanket awaits the lucky first place horse in the winner's circle.

Future Farmers of America

After working with their animals all summer, it's show time.  Tomorrows farmers learn life's lessons in the real world.

Fair Time

Tis the season.  Fall is in the air.  I just love a good fair.  Can you smell the fair food, hear the music from the merry-go-round, the kids laughing, the loudspeakers blaring?  Don't forget the arts & craft building.  The handmade quilts, jars of canned fruit, flower arrangements, horse racing, and tractor pulling.  Homemade ice cream, snow cones, elephant ears, and polish sausage (piled high with fried onions).
