And A Happy New Year

This is a good day to stop for a second and think back over the past year.  Sing praises for all of the blessings that rained down upon us through this past year.

Have a safe and joyous holiday.

Cades Cove Methodist Church

This church was built in 115 days for $115.00 in 1902.  Notice that there are two front doors.  This usually indicates the church follows the custom of men sitting on one side of the church and women on the other side.  But this church didn't follow that custom.  The two doors are there because the church borrowed the building plans of another church that did divide its congregation by gender.

The Tate House

A private residence built from a rare pink marble called "Etowah" marble.  It was built in order to demonstrate the use of marble in construction of large buildings.  This 19,000 sq ft house is on the National Registser of Historical Places.  For more information visit their website at http://www.tatehouse.com/history.

We were lucky enough to visit this house while the pink roses were in bloom and were able to talk to the current owner.  An interesting fact is that each side of the house was built in a different architectural style in order to demonstrate the versatility of the marble.  The famous marble mine is in their backyard and still in operation and put the town of Tate, Georgia on the map.

Oh Come Come Come

Come to the church by the Wildwood
Oh, come to the church in the vale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the vale

Lyrics by  Dr. William S. Pitts, 1857

This little country church reminded me of this hymn from my childhood.

Noon Whistle

I have been going to this steam show for about 40 years.......I stated going with my dad and my uncle (who was totally hooked on these huge old steam engine).   They are both gone now, but we keep going anyway.  We take the time to reflect back to that time in history when this was the primary power source.  The good old days......so they say.

The Guiding Light

The Presque Isle Light house is located on a strip of land along Lake Huron between Alpena and Rogers City in Michigan.  Built in 1870, it is 113 feet above the limestone foundation.  The light keeper's cottage is at the base and now serves as a museum.  The lighthouse was automated in 1970 and is still in service.
