Lake Erie on the Rocks

Cold, windy, and rainy on the shore of Lake Erie. The rocks were slippery, so I let Greg take this photo. I am still afraid of slipping and falling - but I did get a new pair of hiking boots for Christmas that have better traction in bad conditions. Maybe I'll try them out next week.

I thought this photo would be a good way to end the year. On Christmas Day we drive to downtown Detroit to help the Cass United Methodist Church give homeless families a special Christmas meal. Afterwards we like to go exploring. We came upon this wonderful mural on the side of an abandoned building. I don't know it's history. I only know that we had to stop and read the message. It gave us pause to reflect.

Roadside Rest Stop

In the early 1920's little country stores like this one started appearing along the dusty dirt roads. Cars were becoming available to more people. Travel to distant locations became more common. Back then it was a big event to travel on dirt roads for 20-30 miles to visit "distant relatives." These little convenience stores were strategically located so that you could get gasoline and a refreshing soda pop along the way. Although the gas pumps have disappeared from this abandoned building, there were stacks of old egg cartons on the shelf. This particular store was a place of social networking for the local inhabitants probably up into the 1970s.

This picture was taken earlier in the week. The entire side of this building is windows that behave like a giant mirror. When I walked down the same path today, 5 days later, the leaves were all on the ground, the trees are naked and the reflection is empty.

What an incredible fall. Some of the trees are still beautiful. With weather in the mid 60s - which is unusual for this time of the year, I was tempted to sit on this bench and enjoy the sunshine on my face. Makes up for yesterday, when it was cold, windy and rainy. Well, that's Michigan for you.

At work I received a special project that allowed me to go around campus and take pictures of the storm water retention ponds. This was a wonder break from my normal work. Yesterday, was lucky enough to catch a flock of geese that are still hanging around. Life is Good!

Mail Box Project

Greg and I started a personal project this summer. We are going to put together a book on mailboxes - new, old, unique, pretty, ugly, etc. This one comes under the "unique" category. I just couldn't wait to share this one. In case you can't see it - the arm holding up the mail box has a continuous waterfall coming out of it. The water recirculates and is constantly running all summer long. It is just the first of many curious things in his yard, including a full size waterfall that runs down a reflecting mirror into a pool that circles around the outside bar, with stools in the water and a fireplace in the center of the bar..........yipes, can you imagine if you had a drink or two? Seems like too much time or money......but it was fun to look at!

This weekend we attended an interesting field trip to the city of Detroit. One of our stops was on Belle Isle. It just didn't fit my expectations to see a horse and rider galloping along the water front. It served to remind me to be careful with stereotyping. Oh by the way, this picture was taken by Greg. I missed this shot, because I was enjoying the unusually warm weather sitting on the park bench and didn't turn around to see the horse go by until it was too late.

Fall Is In The Air

Harvesting corn by hand is hard work. This team has been trained to quietly (and patiently) move down the rows as a young boy gathered the corn stalks and loaded them on the wagon. Then they would move ahead a few steps and repeat the process. It's amazing to me that a few words from a young boy weighing about 130 pounds had complete control of this pair of horses - each horse probably weighing about 1600 pounds. We enjoyed stopping and watching them work the field.

Do you realize that some of today's youngsters, have never seen a pay phone....lived in a house with just one land line......never experienced a party line....telephone numbers were only 4 numbers long.....never had to dial "O" and talk to an operator in order to place a long distance call. I can't even imagine what new technology the future will bring for the next generation. It's exciting and frightening at the same time.

This particular pay phone is still used and is a very important connection with the outside world to the local Amish community. The true Amish people do not have this modern convenience in their homes. They drive their horses to a central location and share one phone with the entire community.

I Love a Good Fair Sky Watch Friday

One of the best things about summer are the county fairs. I just love a good fair. The sights, sounds and smells. I usually skip the midway and head on over to the livestock barns. Looking at all of the livestock and farm exhibits is the highlight. My favorite fairs are agriculture based. You can see farm produce, flowers, quilts, antique farm equipment, livestock, 4-H livestock, tractor pulling and so much more. The kids getting their animals ready and showing them at their finest -brings back great memories. The Fulton County fair in northern Ohio surely is a fine example of an agriculture based fair - in case you missed it, the fair grounds has a giant grain elevator in the corner of the parking lot.

Let's Get Ready

I liked this picture for two reasons. Fairs are a great time for the kids to show off their hard work -having spent months taking care of and training their animals. This little girl was working hard to prepare her pet goat for the show ring. She was doing the work herself - not her parents - who often do the work for their kids - which I think it totally wrong - it defeats the purpose. The second reason; I liked the fact that this girl's hair matched the color and texture of her goat. Which in this case is a good thing!

Would you believe it. Football season is here. The University of Michigan's first home game is this weekend. There are a lot of really dedicated football fans in this part of the state. They believe in their team - win or lose.

Some fun facts about the University of Michigan's football stadium:

Michigan Stadium is the third largest stadium in the world. It's nickname is "The Big House"

On September 4th, 2010, 113,090 attended a game at Michigan Stadium between Michigan and the Connecticut Huskies, the largest crowd to see a college football game since 1948 and an NCAA single-game record.

In 2004, Michigan set an NCAA record for average attendance at home games, with an average of 111,025 fans.

The first night football game in the stadium is scheduled for September 10, 2011.

Corn silk is amazing. Each one of these little hairs connects to a kernel of corn and when the proper time comes the kernel is pollinated. The pollen comes from the tassel on top of the corn stalk......well, it's much to complicated for me......thank goodness mother nature has it all figured out.

A farmer works long hours for many reasons. They have a small window of time to harvest their crop and all of the time they have to keep an eye on the weather. Thank goodness they are so dedicated - otherwise the rest of us would go hungry and pay a lot more for our groceries.

These giants are waiting to be taken to the shed and stored for this winter. This is straw - what's left after harvesting the wheat. It will be used for bedding for the cows. They weigh over 600 pounds and have to be moved with a tractor.

Last weekend was Michigan's US-12 garage sale - 188 miles long. What fun. We took a vacation day from work and got started early. The guys are having fun dickering over the prices of these prime pieces of authentic antique farm tools. In the end, everybody was smiling.....well almost everyone!

Flashback in Time - MyWorld

Rail transport is a means of conveyance of passengers and goods. In the good ol' days railways were very important to small agriculture based towns and often towns were built around a rail way. This building is still standing and reminds me of how times have changed. No longer needed - trains pass it by. I remember this building because it was across the road from the mill where we took our corn to be ground into cattle feed.

In days gone by, agriculture communities were built near railways. At harvest time farmers took their grain to these grain elevators. The elevator owners would store the grain until the price was right and then load it onto rail cars for shipment to distant lands. In the present day, the farmers store their grain in large bins on the farm, and when the price is right they take it via semi truck to a grain broker. I don't know if the farmers ever know when the price will be right. They seem to always be waiting: for the right price, right time, right weather.

This grain elevator is abandoned and no longer used. Trains pass it by, no longer needing to stop. Time marches on. We had to stop and admire this grand structure - the paint job was interesting!

The wild lilies are in full bloom. This particular stretch of road had lilies on both sides of the road for about half a mile. They seem to be really beautiful this year. Maybe I have just slowed down and appreciate them more this year. Comes with age - or maturity....whichever........

I noticed that many of these old steam engines seem to have the entire family enjoy them - working and playing together. Between chopping wood, feeding the fire, and filling the boiler with water - there is something for everybody to do. I enjoyed watching them hard at work; running the saw mill and thrashing wheat. And of course, they have to blow their whistle and see who is the loudest!

What is it? Greg likes to take close up pictures and this was of an antique airplane that flew into town on Memorial Weekend for the flyover during the parade. This past weekend was beautiful. Finally I am able to get outside and ride around in the car - still can't drive, and don't go out of the house "unsupervised". Later this week I have a doctor appointment - hopefully I'll be able to lose the cast. One step at a time. I am really looking forward to summer. Abandoned Ore Car

During our travels we came across this old abandoned wooden ore rail car. It was previously used to go into a copper mine and bring the raw ore to the surface. When I was looking at this car I had flashbacks about the people who worked in the mines - the hard work, long hours, and probably low pay. Another reminder of the sacrifices in our past history.

One last storm

Winter is still trying to hang around. I couldn't believe it when we caught a couple of inches of snow on the ground this week. The poor daffodils are froze in time - literally. They just don't know what to do. Blossom or hide.

I am still confined to the house most of the time. Good news. I have a new cast and can bear weight, but still have to use a walker. I can't wait until I can get out with a camera.

Lighthouse on Lake Superior

This lighthouse is located near Grant, Michigan on route 41. The snow "bumps" in the foreground are actually chunks of ice under the snow. These bumps are formed when the wind changes direction and the ice near the shore piles up. Often they are many feet tall and they are constantly changing as the wind shifts.

American Integrity - My World

This is a picture of the Great Lakes "super freighter" called American Integrity. She is a super freighter because of her size: 1000' x 105'. In case you don't know how big that is, check out the truck on the dock for a reference of scale. Here she is, caught in the frozen waters of Lake Superior. Once the shipping lane freezes shut, the freighters can't move until the spring thaw.

Here are some quick facts about Great Lakes shipping:

1,600 miles long: The length of the navigation system, extending from Duluth, Minnesota, to Ogdensburg, New York; the system spans lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Eric and Ontario.

There are 63 commercial ports on the Great Lakes.

Snow Measuring Stick

This is a fun measuring stick to see. Located on Michigan 's Keweenaw peninsula of the Upper Peninsula this measuring stick indicates the annual snow fall: 240.9 inches annual average. Unfortunately, the week prior to this photo, they had abnormally high temperatures and melted all the old snow, so they had to start over with fresh new snow. Still enough snow to enjoy snowmobiling and skiing.

Qunicy Copper Mine - Sky Watch Friday

The Quincy Mine is an extensive set of copper mines located near Hancock, Michigan. The mine was owned by the Quincy Mining Company and operated between 1846 and 1945, although some activities continued through the 1970s. The Quincy Mine was known as "Old Reliable," as the Quincy Mine Company paid a dividend to investors every year from 1868 through 1920.

In order to get this photo I had to walk on a snow mobile trail. If you got off the trail packed down by the snow mobiles, the snow was about 3 feet deep. Fortunately, I am taller than 3 feet, but it would have been a challenging situation.

Here is the picture that everybody has been asking about. The very last picture that I took before I fell. It was a on Lake Superior in the town of Munising. The Upper Peninsula is really beautiful in the winter. Perhaps someday I'll get the courage to return in the winter. In the meantime, I hope to go back in the summer.

Extreme Vacation!

There will be a short break in blogging. I fell earlier this week on the ice and broke both bones in my lower leg at the ankle joint. The doctors installed a plate and several screws to stabilize the bones. Hopefully, if I behave, I can be as good as new before long. In the meantime, I won't be able to get upstairs to my computer. The good news is that I'll have plenty of time to work on photos and learn more Photoshop on my laptop downstairs.

This abandoned rail car is located in the middle of a farmer's field, right where it was last used. There are still rail tracks, but they don't go anywhere. This car was interesting to me because it has a beveled glass window. What fun it would have been to ride through the countryside in this car.

Here at his Highland Park Plant, Henry Ford in 1913 began the mass production of automobiles on a moving assembly line. By 1915 Ford built a million Model T's. In 1925 over 9,0000 were assembled in a single day. Mass production soon moved from here to all phases of American industry and set the pattern of abundance for the 20th Century living.

I thought this was a good reminder of our heritage - during the international automotive show in Detroit.

Popular flowering plant (Euphorbia pulcherrima) native to Mexico and Central America, it grows in moist, wet, wooded ravines and on rocky hillsides. What appear to be flower petals are actually coloured leaflike bracts that surround a central cluster of tiny yellow flowers.

I really like these colorful plants. They are so beautiful. They don't thrive in our cold winters, and we can't plant them outdoors - which makes them special for the short period of time that we can admire them. For more MyWorld photos click here.

On Christmas Day we had the opportunity to travel to down town Detroit. Not much traffic on the holiday, so we were able to enjoy the city in ways that are not normally possible. We found this beautiful piece of wall art- painted on the side of a huge building in a lonely part of town. You can only appreciate this masterpiece when you realize the scale of it. The car is a normal car. Enjoy.

I guess we were just plain lucky. Only about 6 inches of snow, cold temperatures and blowing winds. It could be worse. Just look at the other northern states. Way to go Minnesota! Today is a new day. The sun is shining.

The Big Chill

This poor guy has the enormous task of blowing snow off of the 108,000 seats in the University of Michigan's "Big House" stadium before tomorrow afternoon when the first ever ice hockey game will be held in the stadium. Michigan vs Michigan State. With that many people packed in, I guess it won't matter that it will be below freezing.
